Doctor Sleep is well named, did exactly what it said on the tin, sent me to sleep alright, more of a cure for insomnia than a thriller.

I never really thought about how the meaning of fatherhood potentially plays into the horrifying nature of this movie. A father is expected to work and provide for his family, deal with daily stress without complaining or showing weakness, and even give his life for his family if need be. His role is to sacrifice himself, and he rarely gets the appreciation he deserves. The idea that this movie progressively flips the script and shows a father descending into madness due to stress or evil supernatural forces and instead sacrificing his family, is twisted and brilliant. I just watched it last night and I thought it was pretty good. The climax at the Overlook Hotel was alright. until I learned of the book's ending here. In retrospect the walk down memory lane in the third act went on a little too long and slowed the action down. The director was trying to channel Kubrick at that point which was really unnecessary.
